Ingredients

Scale

Noodles

  • 1 pound dry lo mein or spaghetti

Sauce

  • 1/2 cup tamari or soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup water

Protein & Vegetables

  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 6 cloves garlic, sliced or chopped
  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter
  • 3 cups mixed stir fry veggies (carrots, zucchini, bell peppers, broccoli)

Garnish

  • 1/4 cup fresh basil baby leaves
  • Chopped green onions, amount as preferred
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Cook the noodles: Boil a large pot of water and cook the lo mein or spaghetti noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together tamari or soy sauce, hoisin sauce, toasted sesame oil, and 1/4 cup water until well combined. Set aside.
  3. Cook the chicken and aromatics: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the salted butter and let it melt. Add ground chicken, sliced or chopped garlic, and chili flakes. Cook until the chicken is browned and cooked through, stirring occasionally. Season with black pepper to taste.
  4. Add vegetables: Add the mixed stir fry vegetables to the skillet with the chicken. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes more, stirring frequently until veggies are just tender but still crisp.
  5. Combine and simmer: Pour the prepared sauce into the skillet. Stir and bring to a low simmer. Add the cooked noodles to the skillet and toss everything together, cooking for another 2 to 3 minutes until the sauce evenly coats the chicken, veggies, and noodles.
  6. Serve and garnish: Transfer the lo mein to serving plates or bowls. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds, fresh basil baby leaves, and chopped green onions for added flavor and freshness. Serve warm.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground chicken with ground turkey or tofu for a variation.
  • Adjust chili flakes according to your preferred spice level.
  • Use gluten-free noodles and tamari sauce if gluten sensitivity is a concern.
  • For more depth, add a splash of rice vinegar or a teaspoon of grated ginger to the sauce.
  • Make sure not to overcook the vegetables to keep a nice crunchy texture.
